SUMMARY:Business Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Stories are powerful marketing toolsClimate change is a leading agenda item at this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos. In the WEF’s Global Risks Report 2022\, “climate action failure” ranks as the number one long-term threat to the world\, and the risk with potentially the most severe impacts over the next decade. Since the UN Climate Change Conference\, or COP26\, in Glasgow\, Scotland\, in November\, senior government officials and industrial experts have warned that no nation is moving fast enough with the green transition. \nMore recently\, the conflict in Ukraine has seen several nations\, including the United States and the United Kingdom\, expand domestic exploration for fossil fuels in pursuit of energy security. The UK is expected to give approval for several new North Sea oil and gas projects\, and it is also exploring the possibility of lifting a ban on hydraulic fracturing\, or fracking\, and opening a new coal mine. \nLeaders should not be diverted by false claimsAgainst this backdrop\, Nicholas Stern\, chair of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics\, said Davos provides an opportunity to restate the case for renewables. \n“The logical conclusion that should be drawn from the current bout of volatility and insecurity in fossil fuel supplies is that countries should drive more quickly toward greater energy efficiency and cleaner alternatives\, particularly renewables\,” Stern said. “Leaders should not be diverted by false claims that the current situation signals that we need more fossil fuels.” \nHe said Davos participants can ensure that international public finance is increased and partnered with the private sector to achieve the necessary scale up and lower cost of investment for renewables. \n“Political and business leaders attending Davos should recognise that a failure to accelerate action on climate change is dangerous. It is vital to implement strong policies and increase investment\, particularly from the private sector\,” Stern said. \nAjay Gambhir\, senior research fellow at the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment at Imperial College London\, said leaders in Davos can “make a bold statement that this is the most important moment we’ve faced to maximize energy efficiency and get off fossil fuels”. \nWhile the conflict in Ukraine has highlighted European dependence on Russian oil and gas\, it also brings a “tremendous opportunity to switch away from these fossil fuels more quickly”\, Gambhir said. \n\nThere is concern that some leaders are already turning their backs on pledges made at COP26\, where UK delegates urged other nations to scale back new fossil fuel projects. \n\nUK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has since softened his rhetoric\, stating in the recent Energy Strategy that “net zero is a smooth transition\, not an immediate execution\, for oil and gas”\, and announcing that the UK would step up exploration in the North Sea. \n\nAsher Minns\, executive director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia\, said\, “In recent UK energy policy announcements\, I get the sense that Ukraine is seen as a reason for stepping away from the promises and impetus of the Glasgow summit. \n“Climate and sustainability are central to what the World Economic Forum should be thinking about and discussing. … (Ukraine) demonstrates further－not that extra evidence is needed－the political and economic need for clean energy and reducing demand for energy\, which is central to climate and sustainability.”

SUMMARY:Student Fund Raiser
DESCRIPTION:I have spoken with some successful people in the agricultural sector and read many encouraging stories about rural startups online. \nTellingly\, not one of them has ever claimed that it is easy to make it in the countryside. That fact doesn’t even consider those who gave up and didn’t get the chance to share their experiences. \n[/fusion_text]Still face many challengesDespite measures taken by the authorities to tap into the potential for employment and innovation in rural areas\, young people returning to their hometowns to start businesses still face many challenges\, including those related to funding\, technology and training. \nMoreover\, the traditional view that staying in one’s home village offers little scope for growth dissuades many young people from working in the modern agricultural sector. \nThat helps to explain Wang Ying’s hesitation when she graduated from law school. She told me that her years of diligent study\, aimed at guaranteeing her departure from her home village\, could have led to a good life in the city. \n\nThose thoughts were dominant when her father tried to persuade her to return home. \n\nWang said that when she had the idea of starting a company in the rural area\, she never imagined it would result in numerous struggles. \n\nMoreover\, even when she worked as a career consultant at a university\, she didn’t encourage all her students to return to the countryside and embrace rural entrepreneurship “because they had to know all about the difficulties before they made the decision”. \nI watched some rural entrepreneurs on Douyin\, a popular short-video platform. Their businesses were not as large as Wang’s company\, but they included the owner of a tea field\, a man who ran his family farm as a tourism venue and a sheep farmer. \nThey all talked about various hardships they had encountered. \nSome faced misunderstandings from family and fellow villagers\, and most had to deal with less-than-helpful business rules and infrastructure. \nEven four years after their initial investment\, some rural entrepreneurs had not made a profit. However\, none of them regretted their decision to return to the countryside. \nWang\, now Party chief of her home village\, thanked her father for persuading her to return\, because it gave her the chance to start an e-commerce company and help her fellow villagers earn more. \nIn her video on Douyin\, “Tea field owner” explained why she had quit her job in Guangzhou\, Guangdong province\, and returned to the family farm. \n“When I was a child\, my (migrant worker) parents left me behind when they went to work outside. I hope my knowledge and skills will help more adults find jobs in the village so they can stay with their children\,” she said. \n“Sheep raiser” said the difficulties he had faced proved that “this piece of land really needs us”. \nThe man who operates his family farm as a tourist attraction believes that some day he will make a profit because the beautiful and tranquil scenery suits current tourist market demands. “It’s just a matter of time\,” he said. \nSo\, while not everyone will persist after starting a business in the countryside\, all those who refuse to give up\, whether profitable or not\, harbor a desire to build better hometowns. \nAs “Muzi’s county life” said in his Douyin video\, “The reason we undertake higher education is to help our hometowns eradicate poverty\, rather than to simply get away from them.”

SUMMARY:Business Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Stories are powerful marketing tools Finland: Where winter sports rule \nFinland’s captain Mikko Rantanen lifts the trophy and celebrates with teammates after winning their 2016 IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey Championship final match against Russia\, in Helsinki\, Finland\, 5 January 2016. \nIt’s as ancient as we areIce hockey is clearly the most popular sport in Finland going by attendance figures\, television coverage and sponsorship. In no other European country does ice hockey occupy such a prominent place in the domestic sport scene. According to the International Ice Hockey Federation\, Finland had 75\,781 registered players in 2016 and 263 indoor rinks serving a population of about 5.5 million. The Finnish team has finished on the podium in the Winter Olympics four or five times since NHL players started taking part\, more than any other country. \n\nWinter sport is in the Finns’ blood. Hardly a surprise in a country where winter can lasts over six months. \n\nFinland is experienced in hosting diverse winter sports games\, both regionally and internationally. \n\nThe country has won 161 medals during past Winter Olympics\, including 11 medals at the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix\, France\, in 1924. \nThe Finnish keep the “experience economy” concept in mind while hosting sports events. The Lahti stadium\, as the host of seven skiing world championships\, succeeded in combining ski sports with entertainment\, relaxation\, and tourism. According to Janne Leskinen\, organizing committee executive of the 2017 Lahti World Champions\, the focus is more on the game-watching experience\, and provides tailored services to families and partygoers.
